Kyler Murray apologizes for homophobic tweets sent when he was 14

Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray had the biggest night of his college football career on Saturday when he captured the Heisman Trophy, but a bit of a damper was put on the evening when some offensive tweets he sent back in 2012 were dug up. The Oklahoma star has since apologized.

The tweets, which were sent when Murray was around 14 or 15 years old, featured a homophobic slur that was in one instance directed at a friend of his. They were deleted at some point early Sunday morning, and Murray issued an apology.

I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15. I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.

Murray is hardly the first athlete to come under fire for his social media activity from his younger years. We saw the same happen with Villanova star Donte Divincenzo during the college basketball national championship game; Josh Allen prior to the NFL Draft; and Josh Hader during the MLB All-Star Game.

Most people agree that athletes should not be held responsible for things they said during their teenage or adolescent years, but Murray’s old tweets are yet another reminder that they need to, at the very least, clean up their social media accounts.
