In a surprise move, Virginia announced that BYU’s Bronco Mendenhall will be the team’s new football coach Friday.
Virginia made the abrupt announcement late Friday afternoon.

Mendenhall wasn’t linked to any other jobs, Virginia’s included, so it’s safe to say this came out of nowhere.
Mendenhall has coached BYU since 2005, putting up a 99-42 record. The Cougars say that Mendenhall will coach the team in their bowl game, so he’ll have a chance to cap off his tenure with that hundredth win. After eleven years at the helm and with his team not being in a Power 5 conference – something which Mendenhall has bemoaned in the past – it may have just been time for a new challenge.
