A clear leader has reportedly emerged in the Indianapolis Colts’ starting quarterback battle, even though training camp has not even started yet.
James Boyd of The Athletic wrote Monday that free agent addition Daniel Jones has become the clear QB1 during offseason minicamps. Jones has taken a “significant lead,” in part, because Anthony Richardson’s shoulder injury has prevented him from practicing since May 29.
The implication is that Jones has done very little in camp to threaten his hold on the job. He may be in first place by default right now, but the Colts sound as if they like what they have seen.
The Colts signed Jones with the clear goal of making Richardson work to hold onto his starting job. The former Florida quarterback has not even received the chance so far. He has been sidelined since his injury popped up, but even before Jones arrived, the Colts sounded like they were souring on him as their long-term starter.
Jones threw for eight touchdowns and seven interceptions last season before the New York Giants benched and released him. He will be looking for a rebound season in a new environment, and it sounds increasingly likely that he will get the chance to make that impression.
