Dallas Cowboys emailed fans instructing them how to cheer; fans end up booing

The Dallas Cowboys are nicknamed America’s team, and you figure American sports fans know how to properly cheer for their team. But just in case the fans were unsure, the Cowboys sent them an email providing instructions.

Here’s what the email to the team’s season ticket holders said (via ESPN Dallas’ Tim McMahon):

Dear [Season Ticket Holder],

Sunday we need every Dallas Cowboys fan to get on their feet, get loud and help the defense get a stop! Starting this week against the New York Giants, we will have a new third down graphic on the video board and we want you to get involved in the game.

When you see the video graphic playing on the video board, get on your feet and get LOUD! Together, we can make opposing teams dread coming to Cowboys Stadium.

If we all play our part, we can help give our Dallas Cowboys a true home field advantage.

Sincerely,

Dallas Cowboys Football Club

The big irony is that Cowboys fans turned on the home team during the 29-24 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. Many of the 94,067 fans in attendance booed the team after it fell behind 23-0 in the first half. Tony Romo says he understood why that happened.

“I would have booed us, too. We deserved it that time,” Romo said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “We did not start the game the way we wanted to.”

Not only was the team booed, but so was owner Jerry Jones when he was shown on the jumbotron during the game. He didn’t mind it either.

“I’ve been to boo school. Seriously. That certainly was, I’m sure the fans had the same feeling I did,” Jones said.

Cowboys Stadium opened in 2009 amid great hype, but it has hardly provided a significant home field advantage. The Cowboys are only 15-13 at home since moving to the new stadium, including an 0-4 record against the Giants.

The fans have not been loud — something that was recognized by Troy Aikman earlier this season — so the Cowboys tried addressing that. Their moves didn’t work.

It seems like the team will have to win in order to get that fan support they’re looking for, rather than the other way around.
