ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky says the NFL has put a stop to his popular breakdowns on social media.
Orlovsky has garnered praise for his deep dives into NFL games, typically using video recorded off a monitor to point out finer points of games. He posted one most recently on Sept. 30, when he dove into whether the Chicago Bears had some sort of tell that allowed them to block the Las Vegas Raiders’ attempt at a game-winning kick in Week 4.

On Tuesday, Orlovsky posted one of his breakdowns, but he used timestamps instead of sharing actual video. In a separate reply, he said the NFL had intervened and told him to stop posting his breakdowns.

Indeed, since the end of September, Orlovsky’s analysis has avoided showing video. Perhaps that is when the NFL’s edict was handed down.
Obviously, the league has to protect its property. On the other hand, Orlovsky works for one of the league’s television rightsholders and his analysis was promoting the sport. Getting people more interested in the nuances of football couldn’t be a bad thing, so this feels quite heavy-handed.
Orlovsky is one of ESPN’s top up-and-coming on-air talents. He considered leaving the network this past year, but ultimately remains with the network, even if he cannot quite communicate the way he would like to.
