Report: Darrelle Revis ‘increasingly likely’ to return to Patriots

Darrelle Revis

It sounds like the conventional wisdom leans toward a return to the New England Patriots for Darrelle Revis.

According to CBS Sports’s Jason La Canfora, a number of league sources, including some who would be familiar with Revis’s thinking, believe that the two sides are destined for a reunion if Revis elects to play in 2017. Malcolm Butler is likely destined for New Orleans, and Revis would be an ideal short-term stopgap.

One personnel executive predicted Revis to the Pats, saying it just makes too much sense not to happen.

“We did our work on him. He can still play. He can cover,” the executive told La Canfora. “He doesn’t have that long speed anymore; he’s not going to cover a No. 1 receiver deep. But he can cover in tight spaces and he has great instincts. The film is not as bad as some would have you believe. He’s a perfect fit in that quarters scheme [Bill] Belichick runs, and they have the kind of safeties who can help him out, too. We’re convinced he’s going back to New England. It just makes too much sense.”

The question is money, but La Canfora would not be shocked if the Patriots come close to matching the $6 million salary Revis will make even if he doesn’t play this season.

The rumors here have been building for days now. It simply sounds like the most logical outcome for both team and player.
