Doug Williams apologizes for ‘insensitive’ comments about domestic violence
Doug Williams apologized on Friday for “insensitive” comments he made on the radio regarding Reuben Foster.
The Washington Redskins claimed Foster off waivers this week despite the linebacker being arrested twice this year for domestic violence accusations. The San Francisco 49ers waived Foster following Saturday night’s arrest.
In a radio interview on The Team 980 Thursday, Williams said the Redskins took careful consideration before claiming Foster. The Washington VP of player personnel tried to rationalize things by comparing Foster’s arrests to crimes of others and calling it “small potatoes.”
“We’ve got people who are in high, high, high, high places that have done far worse, and if you look at it realistically, they’re still up there,” Williams said on The Team 980. “This is small potatoes [compared] to a lot of things out there. But at the same time, it’s a big issue in America today, whether or not it’s in football, whether or not it’s in everyday life, whether or not it’s in politics, it’s out there.”
A day later, Williams spoke to the media and apologized.

“Last night has been real tough on me from an emotional standpoint because never in my life that I’ve said anything so insensitive … I’m not going to sit here and make excuses,” Williams said.
Washington may have underestimated the public reaction to their move, but there’s a good reason why they were supposedly the only team to submit a waiver claim for the linebacker. Head coach Jay Gruden says Foster may not end up playing for the team.
Foster is currently on the commissioner’s exempt list.
