Eric Ebron admits to being ‘in the dumps’ mentally this season
It has been a season to forget so far for Eric Ebron, and he knows it.
Speaking with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press on Tuesday, the Detroit Lions tight end discussed his struggles in 2017 and said that he met with quarterback Matthew Stafford to try to get back on the same page.
“That’s my guy,” Ebron said of Stafford. “We had a talk after the game, on Monday, yesterday actually, and just basically tried to help him will me around because I feel like I’ve been in the dumps and haven’t been as mentally engaged as I should be, and he helped me out.
“I can rely on him and he relies on me and that’s what kind of relationship we’ve built over these four years,” Ebron continued. “So I leaned upon him and he’s been a good dude for me.”
The 24-year-old Ebron has managed just 12 catches for 93 yards through the Lions’ first five games combined, a far cry from a 2016 season where he logged career-highs in receptions (61) and receiving yards (711) in only 13 games. The former first-round pick hit rock bottom Sunday with a lone catch for six yards in a loss to Carolina and later blamed Stafford for a perceived bad throw.
On the bright side though, the Lions are 3-2 to start the year despite Ebron’s struggles, and it sounds like he is at least making a concerted effort to work with Stafford and get his groove back going into Week 6 against New Orleans.
