Garrett Reid died of heroin overdose
When Garrett Reid was found dead during the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp in August, it was hard not to suspect that drugs played a role in the death. The Northampton County Coroner has confirmed that was the case.
Coroner Zachary Lysek said on Thursday that heroin was found in the system of the deceased son of Andy Reid.
“We are confident today that Mr. Reid’s death was the result of a self-injected lethal dose of heroin,” District Attorney John Morganelli said at a news conference in Easton.
Garrett Reid was 29 at the time of his death and had been assisting the Eagles’ strength and conditioning coach.
Investigators reportedly found 47 syringes and 65 needles in Reid’s gym bag, along with 19 vials of an unknown liquid. They’re investigating his phone records to determine who his drug supplier was.
Reid notably went to prison for nearly two years after a 2007 car crash and was busted for smuggling pills into the jail through his anus.
“I don’t want to die doing drugs. I don’t want to be that kid who was the son of the head coach of the Eagles, who was spoiled and on drugs and OD’d and just faded into oblivion,” Reid told the judge at his sentencing hearing.
Sadly, that’s exactly what wound up happening to the young man.
