Jets reportedly ‘have interest’ in Josh McCown

Well you certainly can’t accuse the New York Jets of not thinking outside the box as they devise a Plan B in light of the Ryan Fitzpatrick stalemate.

According to a report by Rich Cimini of ESPN on Wednesday, the Jets “have interest” in acquiring Browns quarterback Josh McCown.

McCown, who turns 37 in July, threw for 2109 yards and 12 touchdowns with four interceptions in eight starts for Cleveland last season.

While McCown is little more than an underwhelming veteran on a good day and a total trainwreck on a bad day, he is nonetheless an option the Jets have to explore. They want to bring back incumbent signal caller Ryan Fitzpatrick, who helped lead them to a surprise 10-6 finish in 2015. But the Jets appear unwilling to offer Fitzpatrick much more than backup money, something he does not seem to be content with taking, leading to an impasse between the two sides.

The Jets have also been mentioned in the same breath as other quarterback options such as Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III, but those might just be plays of leverage against Fitzpatrick.

In order to land McCown, the Jets would have to so via trade or cross their fingers that he is released, something the Browns may not do considering that they already cut ties at long last with Johnny Manziel in recent days. But regardless, the Jets will have to keep all of their options open to deal with what is becoming an increasingly murky quarterbacking dilemma that is leaving their entire offseason in limbo.
