Jets OC Chan Gailey expects Geno Smith to be starting quarterback

Geno Smith JetsThe New York Jets may have signed Ryan Fitzpatrck and drafted Bryce Petty, but they still are hoping that Geno Smith will be their starting quarterback.

Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said Wednesday that Smith “probably” will be the team’s starter in Week 1. According to ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini, Gailey indicated that there’s really no way Smith can lose the job in camp.

Gailey says Smith is “very talented,” leading him to expect big things from the former West Virginia quarterback.

Smith has shown some flashes for the Jets during his two seasons as their quarterback, but he has committed too many turnovers. He has thrown 34 interceptions compared 25 touchdowns and he has lost a few fumbles too.

The Jets have given Smith some good weapons with Eric Decker and now Brandon Marshall, so he won’t have many excuses if he fails to perform next season. We’ll see if he lives up to Gailey’s expectations.
