Jets announced they have signed Todd Bowles to contract extension

Todd Bowles

The New York Jets were expected to be the worst team in football this season, but they exceeded expectations and have been competitive throughout most of the year. That’s almost certainly one of the reasons head coach Todd Bowles is coming back next season.

On Friday, the Jets announced that they have signed Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan to contract extensions.

“We are very happy to have extended both Mike and Todd. During their time here, they have worked together to help the organization build a foundation on which to grow,” Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement. “They are identifying, developing, and getting productivity out of our players. I believe we are headed in the right direction. This provides us continuity and stability as we continue to move this team towards sustained success. We still have a lot of work to do and I am excited to work closely with both of them as we move forward.”

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Bowles and Maccagnan have signed new two-year deals that run through 2020.

Bowles is in his third season with the Jets. He has compiled a record of 20-27 with the team, but the roster composition has been far more of an issue than the coaching. New York has not been able to draft and develop a quarterback, and they spent last offseason selling off most of their biggest assets.

There was some talk that at least one other team was interested in Bowles if the Jets fired him, but those rumblings are irrelevant now.
