Jimmy Garoppolo learned plenty from playing behind Tom Brady for three-plus seasons in New England, but there was one point when he felt like arguably the greatest quarterback in NFL history should be holding the clipboard for him.
OK, so maybe Garoppolo didn’t actually think the four-time Super Bowl MVP would be benched in favor of him, but he was quite candid in speaking about his level of confidence in an interview with Bleacher Report’s Joon Lee. As any great quarterback should, Garoppolo believed he could be the best. And he even thought his best would eventually be better than Brady’s — if it wasn’t already.

Brady himself would respect that kind of mindset, as no one encompasses it more than the 41-year-old. It’s no coincidence Brady put together three of his best seasons as a pro with Garoppolo breathing down his neck, and No. 12 should know better than anyone that any NFL starter can lose his job for good in the blink of an eye.
For what it’s worth, Garoppolo said Brady taught him a lot and called him once a week during the offseason to check on his progress, so all the reports about Brady’s feelings toward Jimmy G. may have been overblown.
