Report: Johnny Manziel reaches deal for dismissal of Colleen Crowley assault case
Johnny Manziel appeared in court on Thursday for a hearing in his ongoing domestic violence case, and he reached a tentative deal with prosecutors that would result in the case being dismissed.
A judge set another hearing for Dec. 1, but defense attorney Jim Darnell said he was encouraged with the way things went.
“That’s all in progress,” Darnell said of the pending agreement, according to The Associate Press. “Until we get something done, if we do, then we’ll announce it.”
Manziel is facing a misdemeanor charge that could result in up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. He was accused of hitting and threatening his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley back in January, with Crowley saying Manziel hit her so hard he ruptured her eardrum.
Manziel, who remains a free agent, was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He still could face a suspension for the domestic violence case even if the case is ultimately dismissed.
As Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reiterated on Thursday, Manziel and Crowley reached an out-of-court settlement months ago in which Manziel was given a two-year protective order. Manziel’s camp reportedly claimed at one point that there was a video showing Crowley attacking the former Texas A&M star.
There has still been no indication that any NFL teams are interested in signing Manziel.
