Michael Bennett concerned about Seahawks’ depth moving forward
The Seahawks have been to two consecutive Super Bowls thanks in part to a collection of players who are/were being paid below their talent level and performance on the field. However, the time has come for some of those players to get big dollar contracts, which means others will become salary cap casualties. It was inevitably going to happen and defensive end Michael Bennett feels the quality of Seattle’s depth may suffer as a result.
“I do worry about that, because depth is what got us to where we were, and that’s what made us win championships,” Bennett said via Yahoo! Sports. “Everything has a shelf life and we understand that so we have to make the most of our opportunities while we’re playing now.”
Russell Wilson recently inked a huge deal. Bobby Wagner received a big pay day as well. While Kam Chancellor is holding out for a new contract, Bennett is a camp but has expressed his desire for a new deal as well.
As more long term extensions are handed out, there will be more who find themselves in Tony McDaniel’s situation. McDaniel was recently released. He may not be as big a name as some others on the defense, but his work hasn’t gone unnoticed by Bennett.
“That’s what people don’t understand, people talk about Tony McDaniels like ‘Oh, he’s just another guy,’ but think about, how does a Bobby Wagner make those tackles?” Bennett said. “These are the workers. It’s like the clothing line. You see the people who own the clothing line, but you don’t see the people who work and make the clothes. The middle man is always needed for success in this league.”
While the Seahawks are still a team that is more than capable of making it to the Super Bowl for a third consecutive season, there will likely be more turnover in the near future. It doesn’t mean they can’t maintain a period of success, it will just likely require a new crop of middle-tier players to support the established stars.
