The New England Patriots may or may not have intentionally taken air out of footballs during their win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game, but don’t expect the New York Daily News to wait for the facts before mocking Bill Belichick.
The back page of Tuesday’s edition of the Daily News features a cartoon drawing of Belichick holding the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The football on top of the trophy has a hole in it with air coming out, and the headline reads “BALLBUSTER.”
A report revealed on Monday night that Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson alerted the team’s equipment manager that a ball felt deflated when he intercepted a Tom Brady pass in the second quarter. A video appeared to show officials stopping play to swap out a game ball at the start of of the second half.
As the Daily News noted, the Patriots aren’t going to get the benefit of the doubt. Because of Spygate, they are typically guilty until proven innocent. And even if that happens, many people will still say they cheated.
