The NFL seems to be trending toward younger, offensive-minded head coaches in recent years, and it seems likely that we will see more of that this offseason as several teams look to fill their head coaching vacancies.
Because of coaches like Sean McVay, who was an offensive coordinator before he helped turn the Los Angeles Rams into one of the best teams in football, at least one defensive assistant feels coaches in his line of work have little to no shot at landing a head coaching gig in 2019.
Call it the Sean McVay effect: There are defensive coaches who believe teams with HC vacancies are more inclined to interview young, offensive-minded coaches. One D coach joked that a quality control coach for McVay has a better chance at an HC job than any high-profile D coach.

There are currently eight head coaching vacancies across the NFL, so it seems unlikely that all of those will go to offensive coaches. However, the success McVay has had in LA and Matt Nagy has had with the Chicago Bears has certainly helped nudge things in that direction.
For what it’s worth, at least one of the most sought-after head coaching candidates is currently a defensive coordinator. He could end up being one of the few exceptions.
