The Miami Dolphins have made their head coaching hire official, and now they will turn to the business of filling out his staff.

New Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins are targeting former Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator, according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Fangio has widespread interest from other teams, but reportedly tops McDaniel’s wishlist for his Miami staff.

Thus far, the Dolphins have retained much of Brian Flores’ staff even after firing Flores himself. That includes defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, who according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport could still be retained.

If Fangio is Miami’s preference, there are plenty of reasons why. The 63-year-old has a strong record as defensive coordinator in San Francisco and Chicago, and his Denver teams also typically boasted strong defenses. He interviewed for at least one head coaching job, suggesting he is at least open to working again immediately. On paper, he would also be a strong complement to McDaniel’s innovative offensive ideas.
