Robert Griffin reportedly looked unimpressive during practices
Robert Griffin III wasn’t exactly making people salivate over his skills at Cleveland Browns offseason workouts, according to a report.
According to Pat McManamon of ESPN, Griffin never really hit his stride during OTAs. Though he was said to be diligent and obedient and willing to do whatever coach Hue Jackson asked, he was underwhelming in open practices. Among his issues were short passes being tipped or intercepted, a reliance on short routes and checkdowns, and poor footwork.
McManamon notes that only six of the practices were open to the media, so that is all he has to go off, but it sounds like he came away unimpressed with Griffin’s progress.
The Browns may know it, too, as they’ve already been managing expectations a bit. Jackson, for instance, said that his quarterback is “still developing,” and there has been an emphasis on fundamentals during offseason workouts. Plus, he’s learning an entirely new offense with a very young receiving corps. Griffin hasn’t been formally named the starter, so he has work to do if he wants to convince Jackson to hand him the keys to the offense. It sounds as though he’s off to a fairly inauspicious start.
