We all know NFL players are often willing to spend thousands of dollars to keep the same jersey number when they join a new team. Heck, Darrelle Revis reportedly paid $50,000 to keep No. 24 when he went to Tampa Bay. But how much can you pay before it becomes too much. What about sex with a girlfriend? Is that too much?
Former NFL safety Rodney Harrison discussed the attachment some players have to their jersey numbers on NBC Sports Network’s “Pro Football Talk” earlier this week. We’ll let him take it from there.
“[A] guy offered another guy $50,000 for his number and the guy said, ‘No way, I need my number,’” Harrison explained. “It just shows you how superstitious these guys are and how connected they are to their number. But at the same time, then the next thing was probably the craziest thing. Money, people offer that all the time, but the guy said, ‘Hey man, I’ll allow you to sleep with my girlfriend.’ Once he said that, I lost my mind. I said no way can it be that serious. I said, ‘Obviously you don’t love your girlfriend that much.’”
And we thought trading a year’s supply of diapers was pretty insane? If someone needs a number badly enough to offer their girlfriend, they either need to break up with her or seek some psychologic help for how attached they are to their jersey.
