Russell Wilson could be in danger of losing his starting job quickly

The New York Giants enter the 2025 season with veteran Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback, but his job security may not be that strong.

In her weekly notes column, Dianna Russini of The Athletic suggested that Wilson could lose his job very quickly to rookie Jaxson Dart if the Giants do not get off to a good start. The Giants have treated Dart “almost like a starter” during preseason, and Dart has successfully handled everything the team has thrown at him.

The pressure coach Brian Daboll is facing to deliver results this year could also work against Wilson. A slow start will only put more pressure on Daboll to make a quarterback change, and by making Dart the backup, the Giants are suggesting they would be comfortable putting Dart in a game if anything happened to their starter.

Dart was impressive enough in training camp that he actually beat out Jameis Winston for the No. 2 quarterback spot. He threw three touchdown passes in as many preseason appearances to go with a quarterback rating of 113.1.

Wilson, 36, has a very complicated incentives package in his contract with the Giants. He undoubtedly signed with the team because he believed he had a clear path to being the Week 1 starter. With the Giants set to face Washington, Dallas, Kansas City, and the Los Angeles Chargers in their first four regular season games, he will have to play well against tough teams in order to keep that job.
