Vince Wilfork to become free agent after Patriots decline option
Vince Wilfork has likely played his last game as a member of the New England Patriots.
On Thursday morning, Wilfork announced via a statement on Twitter that the Patriots have decided to not pick up his two-year option. After some tense negotiations last offseason, Wilfork agreed to restructure his contract and sign a new three-year, $22.5 million deal. By declining his option, the Patriots save $8 million in cap space for 2015.
There’s still an outside chance Wilfork could return to New England for less money, but his statement made it seem like his 11 seasons with the team have come to a close.
“Please know how blessed my family and I are to have been able to play 11 years in New England for an amazing organization,” Wilfork wrote. “The love you guys have shown me has been my inspiration year in and year out. … New England has been and always will be my home.”
Wilfork, who had bounced back from a devastating Achilles injury to anchor New England’s interior defense again last year, appeared to wear down as the season went on. However, he insists he is not retiring.
“Can I still play football? Hell yea!” he wrote. “Do I still love football? Hell yea! One thing is for sure, I will always be a fixture in New England forever.”
Wilfork was a part of all four Patriots Super Bowl championships and has been a fan favorite because of his work in the community and hilarious sense of humor. He should have no problem finding work if he chooses to keep playing.
