Wade Davis never played an NFL game, but he spent time on the Titans, Redskins, and Seahawks rosters hoping for a shot. He was a part of the NFL culture and a member of NFL locker rooms. He was also gay, though he hid that fact while he played.
Davis was profiled by OutSports.com, and filmed the above video with SB Nation where he talks about what it was like being gay and trying to make it in the NFL.
Davis struggled over what kind of advice he’d give to a gay player who was contemplating coming out knowing that the reception would be controversial. He also shared a story about when he was warned by teammates not to be different, and how he went out to a strip club that night to make it rain and prove to his teammates he was one of the guys.
The video is very insightful and definitely worth watching.
