The Washington Commanders have made some significant additions to their roster this offseason, and they now have a new big name on their coaching staff as well.
Wes Welker has joined Dan Quinn’s coaching staff in Washington, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported on Monday. The former star wide receiver will have an official title of personnel analyst.
Welker was a wide receivers coach for the Miami Dolphins the past three seasons. He was fired in January following a season in which the Dolphins took a step back in their passing game. Welker had served in the same role with the San Francisco 49ers for three seasons prior to that and followed Mike McDaniel to Miami.

Washington will be the fourth stop of Welker’s coaching career, as he was also an offensive assistant with the Houston Texans in 2017 and 2018.
Welker, 43, is best known for his stint as a wide receiver with the New England Patriots from 2007-2012. He made the Pro Bowl five straight seasons with the Patriots and led the NFL in receptions three times. Welker, a two-time First-team All-Pro, was Tom Brady’s favorite target for many years.
Welker retired as a player after the 2015 season and went into coaching shortly after that.
The Commanders acquired Deebo Samuel via a trade with the 49ers this offseason. They already had one of the better wide receivers in the NFL in Terry McLaurin, so Welker will have plenty of talent to work with in Washington.
