Watch: David Backes takes skate to the face, leaves game
Boston Bruins center David Backes suffered an injury during the first period of Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes that is not for the squeamish.
Hockey is a dangerous sport to begin with, and one of the more underrated aspects of the game is the potential that a player could take a razor sharp blade to the face at any given moment. Unfortunately, that happened to Backes when Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson lost his balance and his leg went flying in the air.

It was hard to tell if Backes was bleeding, but he was very quick to leave the ice and acted like his face had been cut open. We’ve seen the damage a skate to the face can cause far too many times in the past, so hopefully whatever injury Backes sustained was minor.
