Michael Phelps pleads guilty to DUI, gets probation
Michael Phelps on Friday pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence. The 18-time Olympic gold medalist was arrested for his second DUI back in September.
The Associated Press reports that Phelps was sentenced to a year in prison, though the sentence has been suspended for a probationary period of a year and a half. If Phelps does not violate his probation, he will not serve jail time.
Police say Phelps registered a .14 on the breathalyzer — nearly twice the legal limit — and was driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone. The DUI arrest was his second in Maryland, with the first coming back in 2004.
Phelps announced back in October that he was entering a rehab program to address his drinking habits. It’s unclear if he plans to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
