Ryan Lochte apologizes for way he described ‘traumatic’ events

Ryan Lochte

Ryan Lochte on Friday issued an apology for his role in a gas station dispute over the weekend that has turned into a full-blown investigation.

While he did not concede that he lied about what happened early Sunday morning, Lochte said he would like to apologize for his “behavior” and for “not being more careful and candid” about how he described the events. Here’s the full statement:

Lochte described the situation as being “traumatic” given that he and his three U.S. swimming teammates had a gun pointed at them in a foreign country where there is a language barrier. He did, however, admit that the situation could have been avoided.

Based on all the information we have learned over the past several days, it sounds like the four swimmers did have a gun pointed at them by at least one security guard. However, Lochte initially made the incident sound like a random robbery. He obviously left out certain pieces of information that would have made the Olympians look bad, which makes sense when you consider some of the charges that have been filed against Lochte in the past.
