Kevin Pillar records first web gem of 2016 (Video)

Kevin Pillar catch

Kevin Pillar needed just two games to make his first awesome catch of the season.

The Blue Jays center fielder robbed Logan Morrison of extra bases with a diving catch in left center on Monday to preserve Toronto’s 5-2 lead over Tampa Bay in the 7th. says Pillar covered 92 feet of ground on the play and had a route efficiency of over 97 percent. That’s how you make a big play.

Mike Trout climbs wall to rob home run (Video)

Mike Trout catch

Mike Trout may not get a ton of love from the fancy defensive metrics, but with catches like this, it’s hard to see him as anything other than a stellar center fielder.

The Angels’ MVP candidate robbed the Mariners’ Jesus Montero of a 3-run home run during the top of the fourth inning in Saturday’s game against Seattle with an absolutely spectacular catch:

It’s one thing to stick your glove over the wall and catch a ball that was barely going to clear the fence, but grabbing a hold of the wall and propelling yourself a good 4-5 feet over it to make a catch like that is incredible. That requires a perfect combination of timing, awareness, strength and athleticism, and it was nothing short of impressive.

Trout rated as a below-average defensive center fielder last year and is slightly above average this year. That catch certainly should give him a huge boost.

And how does this catch compare to the incredible one he made in Baltimore three years ago?

Chris Archer has great reaction to Kevin Kiermaier catch (Video)

Chris Archer reaction

Chris Archer had a great reaction to a beautiful catch made by Kevin Kiermaier in center field on Monday night.

Kiermaier robbed Orioles leadoff hitter Manny Machado with a great catch against the wall for the first out the Rays recorded in the game.

Archer was worried that the first batter he faced had hit a home run against him, so he kept the celebration low-key when Kiermaier came down with the grab.

Yep, that’s the same face we had when we saw Kanye come up on stage at the VMAs.

Mets make ‘Play of the Year’ on 1-3-1 putout (Video)

Carlos Torres Mets

The New York Mets pulled off what’s being called the “Play of the Year” after recording a wild 1-3-1 putout in Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jeff Francouer was batting in the 10th and hit a comebacker to Carlos Torres. The ball ricocheted off Torres’ leg/foot to first baseman Daniel Murphy, who dove for a backhanded stop, then made a no-look toss to Torres for the out.

Torres looked like he was playing hacky sack on that one. You never know when those skills will pay off!

Omar Infante, Alcides Escobar combine for highlight reel play (Video)

Omar Infante and Alcides Escobar combined for one heck of a defensive highlight on Tuesday night.

During the 9th inning of Kansas City’s 2-1 win over the Cleveland Indians, Infante went up the middle to the shortstop side of the field, backhanded a grounder by Roberto Perez and flipped to Escobar, who made a barehanded grab and threw on to first for the out. That was all to get the first out of the inning in a 1-run game.

Kansas City held on for the win and is now 61-38, giving them the best record in the AL by a solid margin.

Brandon Phillips, Eugenio Suarez combine for amazing play (Video)

The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago Cubs in a close game on Monday night, and they can thank their middle infield for that.

With runners on first and second and two out in the top of the seventh, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips and shortstop Eugenio Suarez combined for one of the best plays you will see all year. Phillips got it started with an amazing backhanded stab and behind-the-back-flip to second.

While Phillips has been receiving most of the credit, Suarez showed incredible concentration to barehand the ball and step on the bag for the out.

The Reds held on and won 5-4.

We have seen some remarkable plays from Phillips in the past, but that was easily among the veteran’s best.

Josh Donaldson makes ridiculous catch in stands to help perfect game (Video)

Josh Donaldson catch

Josh Donaldson is rated as one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball. With catches like this one, it’s easy to see why.

Donaldson went into the stands to take away an at-bat from David DeJesus at the start of the 8th inning in Wednesday’s Blue Jays-Rays game, aiding Marco Estrada’s perfect game effort:

Estrada lost the perfect game and no-hitter when Logan Forsythe reached via infield single on the next at-bat, and he was lifted with two outs in the ninth after allowing a double. He ended up with a no decision, which was a pretty crappy outcome given how well he pitched, but at least his team won 1-0 in 12 innings. Estrada also took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his previous outing, so there’s little doubt about how much he is dominating.

But how about that catch by Donaldson? He went about 2-3 rows into the stands to make it. That was probably the best catch this season since the one by Nolan Arenado.

Joc Pederson crashes into wall on awesome catch, leaves Justin Upton stunned (Video)

Dodgers rookie Joc Pederson has been getting it done for the team with his bat, and now he’s also showing he has quite the glove.

The center fielder robbed Justin Upton of what otherwise would have been a walk-off hit for the Padres during Sunday’s game in San Diego. Take a look at the catch:

Upton was swinging 3-0 with two men on in a 2-2 game with two outs in the ninth. Upton swore he had hit a ball that won the game — possibly even one that would have been a 3-run home run. But Pederson tracked the ball and made the catch at the warning track. He was going full-speed and crashed into the wall to preserve the tie game.

Upton’s reaction was priceless:

To show you how important that catch was, the game went to extra innings afterwards and the Dodgers won it 4-2 in 12. Not only was it a beautiful play, but it also was critical in helping the team pull out a win.

Alex Gordon crashes into fan on awesome catch (Video)

Alex Gordon made one heck of a catch on Sunday and crashed into a fan while doing so.

The four-time Gold Glover winner raced towards the stands in left field and made a catch on a ball hit by Micah Johnson to lead off the sixth inning at US Cellular Field. Gordon completely sacrificed his body on the play because he had to make a leaping catch into the stands in order to snag the ball.

Even with crashing into the White Sox fan to make the catch, Gordon still ended up in the third row on his Derek Jeter-like play. Check out this great photo a fan shared:

Edinson Volquez should buy him dinner after that one.

Jon Lester throws entire glove to first for out (Video)

Give Jon Lester two points for creativity and one point for getting the out.

The Chicago Cubs starter showed some ingenuity Sunday by throwing his entire glove to first base to record an out on a fielder’s choice by Clint Barmes in the second inning of the Padres’ 5-2 win over the Cubbies. Anthony Rizzo deserves some points for the assist as he wisely dropped his glove in order to catch Lester’s.

Unfortunately, making that play wasn’t enough for Lester as he gave up a 2-run home run to Will Middlebrooks earlier in the inning and took the loss to drop to 0-2. Now he just needs to find a new glove that doesn’t let balls get stuck in the webbing.
