Two minor leaguers combined on one of the crazier looking catches we’ve seen. The Corpus Christi Hooks, the double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, were losing 4-0 on Saturday and six outs away from their seventh straight defeat when two of their outfielders fell over the fence tracking a ball in deep left center. Miraculously, left fielder Austin Wates made the catch.
“We were both kind of tracking it and I heard someone in the bullpen scream ‘Fence’ and someone else screamed ‘Jump!'” Wates told Greg Rajan of the Caller-Times after the game. “Instinctively, I did it. I knew I could catch it, but didn’t know how close the fence was. I ended up flipping over and kind of landed on Barnes and looked in my glove and I had (the ball).”
Wates is having a pretty good season at the plate. He’s batting .305 with two home runs, 17 RBIs and a .778 OPS in his third successful season in professional ball. And now he has an awesome catch to add to his resume.
