Moniker Madness: Where Gookie Dawkins Wins (or Rowdy Hardy)

By the graces of LBS contributor Alan Hull, my attention was directed to one of the best non-March tournaments around. The Minor League Baseball Web site is running its fourth annual Moniker Madness tournament. The rules are pretty simple: it’s a 64-name tournament where fans vote to determine the best name in the minor leagues. Presently they’re down to an elite eight.

In the Icicle Reader Bracket, 12-seed Brett Butts pulled a couple of upsets and is facing two-seed Mark Hamburger. I’m expecting to see more Butts in the Final Four.

In the Farmer Works Bracket, it’s all chalk. Top seed Sequoyah Stonecipher has mowed through competition and is awaiting the illustrious Rowdy Hardy in the regional finals. I’ve got a hardy rowdy just thinking about the matchup.

On the other half, Gookie Dawkins has been stunning competition in the Natty Nattress Bracket. The 16th seeded Dawkins has a date with destiny against 15-seed Seth Schwindenhammer. I don’t know about you, but I think Gooky will be cutting down the nets at the end of this thing.

The Razor Shines Bracket lacks the most star power in my opinion. It’s down to two-seed Shooter Hunt and eight-seed Bubbie Buzachero. Top seed Al Alburquerque got a raw deal in the second round if you ask me. I thought he had the goods to make a deep run.

Other names of note to be eliminated: Dale Cornstubble, T.J. Large, and Will Rhymes, who is a distant cousin of Busta. Join in on all the voting fun at MiLB.com.
