Tom Thibodeau Calls Out Refs for Not Giving Derrick Rose More Calls

Even after the final buzzer sounds to end a game, another game begins: the one that happens in the postgame news conference. Phil Jackson used to be a master in that setting, finding ways to tweak the officials so he’d get calls in his team’s favor. In last year’s postseason, Phil primed the refs before the Thunder series by suggesting Kevin Durant gets calls he shouldn’t. Then he said refs need to watch out for Steve Nash’s carries. The result may be a minimal fine from David Stern, but you can’t put a price tag on extra calls from intimidated referees.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau must have kept that in mind, because he made a point to call out the refs following his team’s Game 4 loss in Miami.

Speaking about Derrick Rose after the game, Thibodeau said “He hasn’t been able to get to the line like we thought he would. There’s a lot of contact, and he hasn’t gotten calls.”

The numbers would back up Thibodeau’s assertion — Rose only attempted seven free throws compared to 13 for LeBron James and 11 for Chris Bosh. The Heat got to the line 38 times compared to 22 for Chicago, but they also were more aggressive with their drives to the hoop, and you can’t say LeBron got the calls — he was whistled for an offensive foul at the end of regulation.

Whether Thibodeau was right or wrong with his assessment is debatable. What is a certainty is that it’s usually a good idea to complain that your team isn’t getting enough calls. Believe me, the referees hear the criticism — they listen. And more often than not, they try to make up for it in the next game.

The refs and commish have been on a mission, and that is to get the Heat to the finals and for them to have the advantage in the finals. The refs have proved that throughout the playoffs.

Ever since the Heat coluted to get the 3Amigos,the league, commish and the refs have been on a mission to get them to the finals and to have the upper hand in the finals  when they get them there. It seems like a very good setup but it is going to turn a lot of people from watching any more games, including myself.

Uh, the Heat are on their way to the Finals because they’re the best team in the NBA. How about that?

The Heat, especially James, shuffle both feet before making a set shot.  In my book that is two steps without a dribble.

There were many instance were Rose when to the basket and didn’t get the call. DWade always palms the ball and should have been called for an offensive foul at the end of regulation.

You must be a Heat fan.Everybody looks good when your team has the upper hand.If by a miracle the Heat do get the NBA title they will be the only ones gloating about it because the rest of the world know they coluted to get on the same team. They will be the only ones celebrating, because the trophy will be tarnished.

Why don’t you learn how to spell before you comment? It’s colluded, but I imagine doing a slight bit of check up is too much for you. How did they collude? Because they all signed with the Heat? Oh yeah, they must have broken the rules!

The Heat suck. A bunch of ego’s that continue to needed to be fed. They have no professionalism nor class. Win with pride and modesty. Thats how its done.

just wondering what makes them not have class…..and how do the heat suck and there one win away from going to the finals…..i believe it was the bulls that had a player screaming gay slurs to the fans….lol

im not a heat fan but, its pretty obvious there the best team in league if know bball. what is wrong with teaming up in the last 20 years who has won it by there selfs….jordan is considered the best off all time….which i agree but he had pippen top 50 player of all time and rodman prlly the 2nd best rebounder of all time…jordan, pippen, rodman(bench was deep)….james, wade, bosh (without depth on the bench ) whats the big deal if lebron went to your team you would of been happy….and not talk about teaming up

rose doesn’t get the calls because he is out control when he drive hard call to make fouled or not.

Hey Larry Brown, why don’t you talk about the fact the Bulls had almost twice as many points in the paint, and half as many free throw attempts (or close to it)? I don’t want you calling out my math skills like you did with the grammar up above. Though believe me, I’ve done more math than you’ll do in a lifetime, which is obvious when looking at your analysis, or lack thereof. Usually the team that gets to the paint has way more free throw attempts. And watching the game, the Bulls were very aggressive but did not get the calls. Game 4 refs favored the Heat. Period. And Lebron’s handling of “The Decision” was class-less, and so are his constant nature calls after every made basket. That goes for Bosh too. Oh, and there isn’t sufficient proof to you that they colluded to come together way in advance? So you must also think that it’s just a coincidence that most Federal Reserve Board of Directors come from Goldman Sachs. Wow.

If the refs are giving too many free calls to Wade and James, then it’s time to FOUL THEM HARD and get your money’s worth!! About 60-70% of their calls are actually fouls. Notice how they are always falling down when driving – especially Wade? The Bulls were getting pushed all over the place and no calls. When the same thing happened on the Heat’s end, ALWAYS a whistle. The refs did suck big time. Stern got what he wanted.

The Refs have ruined the Game of Basketball. You have Dwyne three step Wade and Lebron five step James and its never called. Unlike all Major sports all officials have a certian area or responsibility. Football has a sideline judge, backfield Judge, Line judge and head Official. Basket ball you got three guys calling all over the floor. How many times do we see the ref under the hoop not making a call but the ref out on the perimiter makes a call under the hoop!. There should be four official all with certain responsibilities. With the money the players, teams and league is bringing in why not have an additional ref? I will not longer watch basketball until this changes. To many no calls, bad calls and what happend to reviews?

Uh, the heat are on the way to the finals cuz thats what Stern wants. They have 3 great players, dont get me wrong, but are not the best team. Mark my words. The Mavs will win the series.  Stern is going to make sure because he screwed them in 2006 against who? The heat. I saw this coming during the 1st round and I have called every series in the playoffs. Im not psychic, I know the agenda. Stern pushed small market teams in the playoffs due to the looming lockout and to camoflauge the big 3 coming together. Basically to say “see, small markets, you can be sucessful with out big stars. Its ok that they came together because it didnt hurt you at all”

And lebron said retarded which is derogatory towards the mentally challenged. He was not fined by the league for this either. Is the league saying that the gays plight more important than that of the mentally challenged? Or is the league just showing preferential towards lebron?

It’s getting to the point that referees control too much of NBA games. I don’t even like to watch NBA games anymore, because the Refs think they are who the fans come to watch. The refs need to stick their whisles in their pockets and let them play.

  • http://larrybrownsports.com Larry Brown

No, there was a big difference between the two. LeBron said that about a question. Kobe called out a ref to berate him. Don’t do that baiting around here.

Im not implying what Kobe or Noah said was ok but when Lebron said that was retarded, it was derogatory. If it wasn’t, he wouldn’t have apologized. The league also thought it was offensive because they are starting a campaign educating people to not use the words retard or retarded. Players such as Dwight Howard, Carmello Anthony and Chris Paul will be a few to participate.  Don’t make excuses for Lebron. If you’re going to chastise players for offensive words, then it should apply to everyone.
