I just started following boxing promoter Lou DiBella on twitter recently thanks to the advice of SI’s Top 100 tweeters article. The guy isn’t especially active, but he does drop bombs every once in a while. One of those came on Tuesday.
DiBella tweeted “Bulls*** and f*** the hatred. If money huge and right 68 lber,we’ll consider in the future. Sick of c***s criticizing Sergio, a real 54 lber.” That tweet was edited to remove the profanity, but his language was strong.
DiBella followed up to explain that tweet was supposed to be a direct message to an individual, not one for the public’s consumption. He later deleted both tweets.
Lou is no stranger to using strong language, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that he was cussing on twitter. The question is: Who is criticizing Sergio Martinez?
Martinez has an October fight with Darren Barker and has his eye on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He’s probably too big for Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao, so that limits the pool of difficult opponents. He scored the knockout of the year in November against Paul Williams, and most people have him ranked as a top five pound-for-pound fighter. The way I see it, there really isn’t much to criticize. I wouldn’t let anything bother me if I were Lou, because it’s probably coming from an unenlightened source.Google+
