Everett Golson admits he was kicked out of Notre Dame for cheating

Everett GolsonEverett Golson admitted in an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples that he was kicked out of Notre Dame for cheating on a test.

Although initially hesitant, Golson did admit that he cheated, which led him to getting kicked out of school in March.

“Yeah, something like that. I mean that’s what it was,” Golson admitted to Staples. “I ended up using poor judgment. [It was a] test situation, yeah.”

Golson, who helped lead Notre Dame to the national championship game last season after going 12-0 in the regular season, plans to return to the Fighting Irish program. Though he could have transferred schools or gone to a junior college, he decided to try returning to Notre Dame.

“I felt like that’s something that I started that I didn’t want to run away from, go to JUCO or go to another school. I was going to face it,” Golson explained.

Golson, who was a redshirt freshman last season, has been working out with quarterback coach George Whitfield. He says getting busted for cheating was embarrassing.

“Immediately I started thinking about my family. I was more concerned about how my family would take it, me disappointing them.”

Notre Dame has gone 6-2 this season without Golson. Senior Tommy Rees re-assumed the starting job and has completed 55.3% of his passes for 1,944 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. His 143.6 QB rating is the highest of his career. The season hasn’t gone as well as last year, but it’s not like the program has completely fallen off without Golson.

Sports Illustrated will have more on Golson and his family’s reaction to his dismissal in this week’s edition of the magazine.
