Yes, literally. You know how boxers usually sport their native country’s flag on their trunks? Well, Sanchez is doing the same thing, only with his mouthpiece. In fact, he had the USC team dentist customize it for him with the Mexican flag for the game against Notre Dame.

“He put the eagle with the snake on it — it was looking sweet so I had to wear it,” said Sanchez, who is of Mexican descent.

Sanchez said he took pride in the influence his role as USC’s quarterback could have on youngsters.

“When I see little kids after the game and they’re Mexican like me . . . they see hope,” said Sanchez, who attended Mission Viejo High. “That means a lot to me playing for them, playing for my community and this greater L.A.

“I really take that to heart and I think the mouthpiece is just a portrayal of that.”

Sanchez added, “It’s not a Mexican power thing or anything like that. It’s just a little bit of pride in our heritage. Hopefully, it inspires somebody and it’s all for the best.”

“That’s fun. I love it. It’s just all part of it,” Sanchez said. “The band’s going to start playing, ‘Lean Like a Cholo,’ or something. Sweet.”

Lean like a Cholo? That’d be interesting. But someone please tell Mr. Sanchez to chill out on the “model for kids” thing. He’s played just one game (though he did look great), and isn’t assured of the starting job. Wouldn’t want any kids rushing out to purchase the jersey of a backup QB. Now, should he put that mouthpiece on Ebay, that would be a different story.

[...] Mark “Dirty” Sanchez like having Mexico in his mouth [Larry Brown Sports] [...]

If Mark wants to influence youngsters, perhaps he can start by warning of the dangers of underage partaking and overindulgence in the cerveza and tequila.

Meanwhile, Mark isn’t the only USC qb hoping to set an example. Nate Longshore did a great job last Saturday at the Rose Bowl of emulating John David Booty. Defensive pressure applied with the game on the line and Nate threw it right to a Bruin going the other way.

It is disheartening but enlightening that Mark Sanchez cannot even find it in his heart to refer to himself as a “Mexican-American”, let alone wear an American flag. At the end of the day, this is yet another slap at the nation which has given him every opportunity to have a successful and famous life.

He should be proud of his heritage, as should every American. However, if his first allegiance is not to the United States, then, as far as I’m concerned, he can go south of the border and stay there and play soccer and drink beer illegally any time he wants.

I’d be willing to bet my ball sack if Mark Sanchez was Irish NONE of you would’ve posted what you just did.. Unfortunately racism still exists in the good ol’ US of A… Bunch of ignoramus.

Jason, I don’t know who you are referring to, but I called out Mark for his well publicized underage drinking incident in April of 2006. Certainly not the behavior of a role model, I don’t care what his ethnicity or skin color happens to be. Ok, I used cerveza and tequila, if he were of Irish heritage I would have used Bushmill and Michael Collins. Call me a racist. The other half of my comment was mocking the play of Nate Longshore and John David Booty. I guess I’m racist against caucasians, also.

We’ll call out Pete Carroll for his team’s dud against Stanford, but won’t criticize Karl Dorrell for Utah or Notre Dame.

Oh, and one more item for you, my wife’s sister and her husband are Anne and Rafael SANCHEZ !!!

      Jason,

I will not follow the traditional line of defense against a ridiculous charge of racism.

Instead, we are all going to come after you with the shears, because you deserve to be castrated if you cannot discern nationalism from racism, and you certainly know nothing about me or JS.

Also, you show your ignorance by not even making a post using good grammar. Check a dictionary for the plural of “ignoramus”.

Wise up and get used to singing soprano.

JUST TYPICAL OF SOMEONE WHO CLAIMS THEY ARE NOT RACIST, TO POINT OUT THAT MARK SANCHEZ DID NOT REFER TO HIMSELF AS A “MEXICAN- AMERICAN”. DID YOU EVER THINK THAT MAYBE HIS AMERICAN PRIDE WENT OUT THE DOOR THE MINUTE HE WAS REFERRED OR CALLED BY ANY OTHER NAMES OTHER THAN A FINE QUARTERBACK. HIS NAME OR ETHNICITY SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE. AND BELIEVE ME THIS MEXICAN-AMERICAN IS BEHIND MARK ALL THE WAY AND IF ANYBODY KNOWS WHERE I CAN BUY A MARK SANCHEZ JERSEY PLS LET ME KNOW..

Last time I checked wearing a custom
mouthpiece isn’t enough to renounce someone’s citizenship. No one I know calls themselves Mexican-American but instead Mexican including yours truly. It is like someone referring themselves as Chinese-Asian. Just a little geography lesson for all of you there are about 35 countries in America.

That being said as a Bruin fan I hope Sanchez losses every game he plays in except when SC plays Notre Damn.

I am also an American with a Mexican heritage. I applauded Marks use of the Mexican flag mouthpiece. I wish there were more examples of Mexican-American figures just like Mark Sanchez. I don’t understand why people get so upset about this. What’s wrong with showing some heritage pride? Many Mexican-Americans are constantly looking for figures they can relate to like this. This not only encourages people in our country but outside folks to. Wouldn’t it be great if every country in the world had a football? Would it be nice to see countries face each other in a game of football?

Yes Juan, it would be great if every country in the world had a football. :-)

This is not the United States of Ireland nor of Mexico or Africa or Taiwan.
This is America made up of a myriad of different ethnic groups. If you want to display a flag of your nation and that nation’s society, then by all means, go live in that nation. Otherwise, display the flag of the nation you live in currently and embrace the tenets of that nation.

America FIRST. Love it or leave it.

Yes this is America, the land of the free, right? So if you feel like wearing a Mexican mouthpiece then you are free to do so. If you want to display another nation’s flag b/c you are proud of your ancestry then you are free to do so. It does not make you any less of an American. A real American stands behind the values of liberty and freedom of expression. I do wish SOME ignorant people would leave America though.

SO IF THERE WAS AN AMERICAN CANADIAN WEARING A MOUTH PIECE WITH A CANADA FLAG ON IT, OR AN IRISH WEARING A GREEN/WHITE/ORANGE MOUTH PIECE, YOU’RE TELLING ME YOU WOULD WRITE THIS SAME PARAGRAPH ABOUT THEM??? BULLSHIT, YOU WOULD LET IT SLIDE JUST BECAUSE OF THEIR SKIN COLOR. YOU SAY YOU WOULDN’T, BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS YOU WOULDN’T SAY A DAMN THING! IF YOU’RE RACIST, THAT’S COOL, JUST DON’T BE TRYING TO FIND EVERY WRONG MISTAKE ON A YOUNG HISPANIC MALE COMING FROM NOTHING! CONGRATULATE HIM FOR DOING SOMETHING POSITIVE THEN BECOMING A DRUG DEALER OR GANG MEMBER OR EVEN DEAD! UNDERAGE DRINKING?? MOST MOVIES I SEE THAT INVOLVE UNDERAGE DRINKING ARE CAUCASIAN MALES AND FEMALES, AND IN REALITY AS WELL. WHO INVENTED BEER PONG? KEG STANDS? ETC. ALMOST EVERYONE HAS COMMITTED UNDERAGE DRINKING, IT’S NOT A POSITIVE THING, BUT MOST PEOPLE ON HERE HAVE DONE IT! ALSO, NO ONE SAYS A THING ABOUT REBEL/CONFEDERATE FLAGS?? THE DAY YOU ALL ADDRESS BOTH THE CONFEDERATE AND MEXICAN FLAG ISSUE @ THE SAME TIME, I’LL LISTEN, UNTIL THEN. SHUT THE HELL UP!!!

Way to go Mark! I do believe in being a patriot of this great country. I served in the Marine Corps to do my part as a patriot. I am a little surprised at all the haters out there. This is a country that was built up of many different races. With that comes the pride of where their heritage is from. There is nothing wrong with that. I wonder what bothers these people more; the fact that he wanted to show pride in his roots or the fact that he is Mexican American and is successful in what he does.
If you really want to make a statement about being proud of our country, seek out your closes recruiting station and sign up or go and volunteer at your local USO/VA. If your talking about having pride in this country and have not done a thing to show your pride, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

Tony Gonzalez will always be the best Mexican American football player. He is a beast and is awesome. I never liked Sanchez cause he is overconfident which isn’t bad it’s just a trait that I don’t like. Hopefully he can be awesome though with the Jets in the future. GO FALCONS!!!
