Celebrating the Top Females in Sports for Women’s History Month

March 24, 2010 by Erin Redmond • Comments

March is National Women’s History Month and this got me thinking. We always hear about our superstar male athletes on a day-to-day basis but we rarely hear about the gals.  So today I want to salute all the beautiful, talented, and accomplished ladies (that means no Anna Kournikova, sorry guys) in the sports world.

Candace Parker: Not only is this girl gorgeous, but she can play basketball with the best of them. The L.A. Sparks’ superstar has been called the female Jordan and for good reason — she was the first women to dunk in an NCAA tournament game and she helped the University of Tennessee Lady Vols win back-to-back NCAA championships in 2007 and 2008. Parker is not only a great basketball player but she also has a squeaky clean image; she makes a great role model for future athletes.

Jennie Finch: This stunning 6’1″ beauty is a pitcher for the Chicago Bandits.  She has quite the list of accomplishments on her resume to prove her talent. Finch has two Olympic medals — gold (2004) and silver (2008) — and she’s a two-time world champion. Finch is also a two-time Pan American gold medalist and was named co-pitcher of the year in 2005. Sadly for the eager men out there, not only will Finch not be doing Playboy anytime soon, but she’s also hitched to Houston Astros pitcher Casey Daigle.

Danica Patrick: I don’t even know where to start with this high-speed hottie. Danica finished in 3rd place in the 2009 Indy 500 which was a career-best. She was also the first woman to win an IRL race when she took the checkered flag at the Japan 300 back in 2008. Her prize for the victory was getting her face on an airplane. Patrick had five top 5 finishes last year as well as ten top 10 finishes. Not only does this lady burn up the track but also our TV screens. She’s the spokeswoman for Go Daddy and has even had a commercial banned for being too hot for TV. But the best thing in my opinion about Miss Patrick is that she has proven that women definitely can drive (Ashley Force and Milka Duno definitely have provided an assist).

Lindsey Vonn: Who could forget the stunning Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn? She is the most successful female skier in U.S. history and coming off a strong showing in Vancouver. Vonn’s appeared in three Olympics — 2002, 2006, and 2010 — and she even took gold in this past Olympics despite skiing hurt. In addition to her Olympics medals, Vonn has more World Cup wins than any other American female skier and set a new record in 2008 for the most downhill victories by an American.

Erin Andrews: Last but certainly not least I have to mention my idol, Miss Erin Andrews. Not all of the women on list have to play sports — some can just report about them. Andrews was a member of the University of Florida Gator basketball dance team and she’s now starring on Dancing With the Stars. Andrews is drop dead gorgeous and she can talk sports like she’s one of the guys. Andrews spends most of her time stunning men across the nation as a college football, basketball, and baseball reporter for ESPN. Andrews is beautiful, intelligent and knowledgeable when it comes to sports. What more could a guy ask for? As a bonus, she also happens to share the wonderful name of Erin with the very writer of this story.
