Eli Manning emotionally defends Tom Coughlin: ‘We failed him’

Eli Manning Giants

Tom Coughlin may have coached his final game for the New York Giants on Sunday, and that reality is sinking in for many of his players.

Eli Manning was particularly emotional when assessing the situation on Monday, rejecting the premise that Coughlin had failed the team after a second consecutive 6-10 season.

“He definitely has not failed these players,” Manning said, reportedly fighting back tears. “We failed him.”

Manning was also asked if he had a gut feeling about what Coughlin would choose to do.

“Maybe,” he told reporters. “But I don’t want to share it right now.”

It makes sense that Manning would be emotional over Coughlin’s potential departure. The Giants quarterback has never played for another head coach since entering the league, and they won a pair of Super Bowls together.

It has been widely reported that Coughlin will choose to resign Monday, and he was scheduled to meet with ownership in the morning. While there is no official word out of New York, Manning’s comments seem to indicate that will definitely be the case.
