Derek Carr’s comeback tour isn’t exactly selling out stadiums left and right.
Several reporters emerged last month indicating that Carr was “very serious” about making an NFL comeback. Given that the New Orleans Saints still hold Carr’s rights, any team interested in his services would have to strike a deal with the NFC squad.
However, the Saints are reportedly still waiting for suitors to take Derek Carr off their hands. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the team has yet to receive any inquiries through the first week of free agency.
It’s fair for teams to have reservations about signing a quarterback coming off a serious shoulder injury like Carr’s. However, it’s a tough look that not one team made so much as a courtesy call to ask about Carr’s availability. Several of Carr’s potential landing spots have since swung deals with other QB options.
Carr was previously linked to the Minnesota Vikings, but the NFC North team has since acquired Kyler Murray. The New York Jets were also considered a potential landing spot for Carr until they reunited with Geno Smith.
Carr previously stated that he’d only make an NFL comeback if the team he’d join had serious Super Bowl aspirations. At this point, he may be lucky if any team at all takes a flier on him before the season begins.
Florio named two teams that could still be open to signing Carr, the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Neither are considered bona fide Super Bowl contenders, but Carr may need to take any opportunity he can get.
