Greg McElroy Blasts Selfish Mindset in Jets Locker Room

The selfishness of some Jets players became an evident issue when receiver Santonio Holmes was benched during the team’s must-win game in Miami last Sunday. Jets rookie quarterback Greg McElroy gave an even more concerning look at the team during an appearance with Eli Gold on 97.3 the Zone in Birmingham, Ala. McElroy said the Jets locker room was not a fun place to be.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever been around extremely selfish individuals,” McElroy said of the Jets. “I think that’s maybe the nature of the NFL, but there were people within our locker room that didn’t care whether we won or lost as long as they … had really had good games individually.”

“That’s the disappointing thing,” he continued. “It’s going to take a lot to come together next year. I think the fact we struggled at times this year really led to … this corrupt mindset within the locker room. But I think we’re going to regroup. I think we’ll be a better team because of the trials and tribulations this year.”

GM Mike Tannenbaum says they’re going to fix a lot of the issues, but that’s easier said than done. Santonio may have been a major problem, but part of the issue is that he was hardly utilized. The Jets need a new quarterback and probably a new offensive coordinator. And I’d much rather get rid of Mark Sanchez first before I get rid of a playmaker like Holmes, though if his attitude is that bad, I wouldn’t want him on the team either. The Jets still have talent and a good coach, so their problems really aren’t anything a good quarterback couldn’t fix. Paging Peyton Manning.
