Jim McMahon on BYU Honor Code: Find Girls Who Keep Their Mouths Shut
By Steve DelVecchio April 11, 2011 - Posted in Football

By now we have all heard the Brandon Davies story or some variation of it. The BYU center was suspended for the remainder of the 2011 season when he violated the school’s honor code. While it originally did not appear to be a sex issue, it was later revealed that Davies admitted to having sex and rumors swirled that he impregnated a female.

Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon played his college ball at BYU.  In an interview with ESPN Radio on Monday, which Pro Football Talk shared with us, he shared his thoughts on some of the current issues in the NFL regarding illegal hits and the uncertain labor situation.  McMahon’s comments on those topics were a yawn compared to what he had to say about the BYU honor code.

“You had to find girls who kept their mouths shut,” McMahon said when asked about how he managed to stay on the field while attending BYU.

Can you say candid?  We all know college kids are going to be college kids no matter what school they attend, but BYU’s president must have cringed when he found out such a high-profile alumnus had that to say about the honor code.  When the news about Davies’ suspension first came out, part of me didn’t feel badly for him because anyone who attends BYU knows what they’re getting themselves into.  McMahon’s comment just makes me feel bad Davies forgot to wrap it up.

I went to BYU. The vast majority of us committed to, and lived the Honor Code. Those who didn’t were few and far between and definitely the exception. But then again, most of us are rational, emotionally stable, mature individuals. Then enter McMahon. Asking McMahon about the Honor Code is like asking Bernie Madoff if he thinks the the IRS rules are fair. Or a child who runs around in the street in his diper if he thinks its fair to have parenting rules.

McMahon hasn’t the credibility or character weight to discredit BYU, its honor code or its student body. Yawn.

I knew a brother of a cheerleader who was there when he was. Rumor had it that his VERY
first day of school, he was walking to class drinking a Heinekin !! She also saw him at a party naked & drunker than catholic priest !! too funny

I doubt you lived by the honor code. I’m surprised you weren’t pelted by stones when you wrote your comment, you know, “let ye without sin cast the first stone”. If you didn’t have se with anyone, I’m sure you did it by yourself, and I hear that’s a sin.
You have no right to question McMahon, he just spoke the truth.

Just because you don’t think anyone in this world has the capability of living up to their standards of their religion doesn’t mean you have to try and discredit them or make rude and irreverent remarks about them. Bryan Monson sounds like he could be related to our dear prophet President Thomas S. Monson and if he is a relative, I have no doubt in my mind that Bryan is a man of character. Just because you don’t live by the same standards that we do as members of our church doesn’t mean you have to ridicule us. We’re all entitled to our own opinions and standards and this is what most of us choose to live by. If you can’t accept that there are still decent people in this world that don’t have to live by wordly things, then that’s your opinion but we’re gonna stick to what we know to be true. I didn’t even go to BYU but I can tell you that I have lived by the Honor Code not just of the school but of the church. It’s our way of life and you apparently need to get a life if you even found it worth your time to comment on this. Barrett B

I played footbal there in the early 70′s and the same stuff that goes on in any college goes on there also, Mormon or non-Morman. Maybe not to the same extent but it still happens. Like Jim said; you just had to be careful.

The first provision in the Honor Code is to….Be Honest.

So now McMahon has told the World he is and was dishonest and a cheat at BYU.

    Anyone surprised?

BYU was good to you Jim. They honored you just last year, along with 7 other former BYU All-American QB’s, and you received the loudest ovation from 65k fans at Lavell Edwards Stadium.
    You’re Our prodigal son.

You pledged to help raise scholarship money with the other QB’s, for the BYU program and a statue for Lavell. And now this?

Is this how you honor Lavell?

Your Father has been begging the school to induct you into their Hall of Fame. But, you won’t finish your last 6 credits.

I’ve been in your camp for 30 years Jim. But apaprently you are just a perpetual adolescent who refuses to grow up. DUI, anyone?

Well, I’m done with you. Don’t grace us with your presence anymore, you’ve burned your last bridge.

I would think a guy who married a stake presidents daughter and a father with daughters of his own, would have more mauturity than your remarks exhibit.

Steve Young is in the Hall of Fame, he followed you at BYU and learned from you, however, he grew into a Man, you did not. You want to be the hip college bad boy all your life, well at 53 years of age, in ain’t cool anymore Jim.

Grow up! I just think it’s One too many Jim, One too many.
    You owe BYU an apology.
    Otherwise, good Riddance.

Hey Jim, how does your wife and daughters feel about your advice to find girls who keep their mouth’s shut?

Davies should sue you Steve Delvicchio, because he did not get a girl pregnant.

Give Mc Mahon his dues for his athletic prowess. There are basically two kinds of people in any situation. The first is the one who lives his life with integrity and honesty. The second is the one who spends his time trying to figure out how to beat the system. Give Brandon Davies credit for living up to his committment. He could have tried to wait til the NCAA tourney was over. The bottom line is Brandon Davies is a MAN. He felt he had to atone for what he did. Mc Mahon is just another athlete who seems to like to hear his own voice, and see how good his photo op turned out. Get real, get some guts, and stop being a follower. Brandon Davies is a leader, like it or not.

Good thing Sonny is here to criticize everyone else’s opinions and not post his own for fear of being criticized himself.

In all honesty, there will always be people to find ways to cheat. In a testing center with dozens of cameras and people patrolling the rows between desks, there are still people able to cheat, just as I’m sure there are people who find ways to get around the no-sex policy. McMahon was one of them, but because he was such a great player, his words seem to hold more sway with those ignorant of the situation at BYU. You may disagree with how BYU is run, you may disagree with how the Mormon church is organized, and you are entitled to that. But when you call a religion full of “sh$t,” that is when you stop expressing your opinion and begin to antagonize people.

(Feel free to criticize me as well, Sonny. If you ever man up and grow a pair large enough to post your own opinions, they will be received just as well as everyone else’s here.)

Your acting like he just went to BYU yesterday and slept with some girls. This was how many years ago? I don’t understand why he “burned his last bridge” either. He just told the truth. He was in college and back then for whatever reason he did what he did. Are you saying you’ve never done something you weren’t proud of? Especially when you were younger? What if someone asked you about it, what would you say? Would you lie, or just tell it how it was? I don’t understand your point of view, but don’t bash on him now because he was blunt about it and someone asked. Calm down.

The mormons are a cult. I got recruited there to play football at the same time as Jim McMahon…I know we knew several of the same people. Thankfully, I went to another school (Pac-10) that couldn’t be any more open-minded/liberal. We could do anything…as long as we went to class.

  • http://twitter.com/TXGiant Michael

This is the same BYU with the same honor code that sends its football players away for 2 year “missions” to work out and get larger, stronger, and faster and return as sophomores with senior bodies. These “missions” are far from the remote jungles and other places other regular students go to. Yeah, BYU – so honorable. Whatever.

How accurate is the Mormom “South Park” episode?

  • Anonymous

I am assuming you are Mormon? I do not doubt you believe you have found the true faith, but you really should look into it. I am not trying to be snide or rude. I just think that everyone regardless of their faith should know the history behind it and be able to have a reason for why they believe. Do not just read what the LDS church gives you. Any true faith should be supported by facts from without as well as within.

  • Anonymous

This is curious. If you agree with BYU’s tenents, then Jim confessing his ways from decades ago should be applauded in the same way you applaud Davies for fessing up when he did. A confession is a confession whether it be in the moment or years later. No matter what, you told the truth. Did he say the rules at BYU were antiquated or should be tossed? He simply stated a truth: If you go to BYU, but you want to be sexually involved (out of wedlock), then you need to be 1.) Discreet and 2.) find a partner who is equally discreet. I mean, isn’t that the truth? So what exactly are you angry about? That someone of his stature spoke the truth? I don’t get it…. I also don’t get why they can’t have tea. Someone please explain that one.

You are an uninformed moron(m). He is missing credits but McMahon has said was asked to leave immediately following his last bowl game. He was not given the chance to finish his senior year. As soon as he was of no more use to them, they sent him packing, asked to leave campus. He won games for them, gave them publicity, made them money on bowl games, and they overlooked what he was up to while that was happening. BYU then tossed him out. What a bunch of hypocrites. They knew what he was up to but they were benefiting so didn”t care.

MacMahon also said he was appreciative of his time there. He just hates the hypocrisy of the idiots that run the place. Perhaps BYU, being a pious as it is, should just operate as an educational institution and cancel the sports program. Do you really think there aren’t any BYU athletes there taking products to “enhance’ their performance?

BTW… Do they teach or pay attention to grammar at BYU It doesn’t appear so.

I didn’t go to BYU but had the utmost in respect for the guys who played ball for them.

I’ll always be a fan of BYU.
Good luck with the choice of going independent.

100% accurate. Matt Stone and Trey Parker have hundreds of millions of dollars on the line with South Park’s incredible success, why would they just make up lies and put their media empire at risk?

My favorite Mormon fact; Mormon’s believe that the Native Americans are actually Jews that walked to America from Israel about 2,600 years ago. While making up the “Imaginative Book of Mormon,” Joseph Smith decided to call these dark skinned people “Lamanites.” (get this…) The Lamanites were eventually killed by the Nephites (good white people) by 500 A.D. BUT… the bad, brown Laminates continued to live-on and are now called Native Americans. (The Book of Mormon also stated that when Lamanites converted they would then become “white and delightsome.” In 1981 the church decided to replace the word “white” with “pure.”)

I use to laugh about this very laughable part of the Mormon church, but it’s just sad to me now. I can’t believe that such a giant group of people have vested their lives into this lie. I’m sorry if calling it a lie is offensive to some, but there’s no other way to put it. There are hundreds of facts that point to the idea that MAYBE Joseph Smith made up a bunch of stuff to encourage people to think higher of him? People do it all the time. Sure it’s a little extreme to start your own religious following, literally, but hey, people are always trying to manipulate others into thinking they are cool. It’s kind of human-nature.

Now I’ll admit, I’ve met some very nice Mormon’s that appeared to have their head on straight. And I’m confident that they are going to live a life of well-being and success. I’m happy for them and I wouldn’t dream of encouraging them away from their faith. But, the book of mormon is simply another way to help human-beings understand “something.” (People just want answers to some things that aren’t answerable right now. Science explains a lot, but not even close to everything. Maybe someday.) It’s too bad for them that their book is a complete lie because they do live wholesome lives and they do help a ton of people. And it’s not like they can just change every page of the book they worship… They should, but they can’t. Not only because millions of people live by it, but more-so because a few hundred, maybe thousands of Mormon’s make a lot of money of its success… ;)

    > How accurate is the Mormon “South Park” episode?

    Thanks for asking.

It is a travesty, a complete distortion, despite Parker’s patronizing claims to be so knowledgeable. He claims, in a commentary on the episode, that the only “healthy” Mormons he knows are those that don’t take their religion’s claims seriously.

South Park: Dum dum dum dum.

Fact: Mormons strongly encourage education, and their level of faith and involvement in their religion generally increases with increased level of education. The percentage of Mormons who have completed post-secondary education is significantly higher than it is for the US population in general, and for Mormons having sixteen years or more of education, church attendance rates reach 70 to 80 percent. Seventy-five percent of Mormon scientists believe that Joseph Smith was inspired of God.
    http://www.fairlds.org/Misc/Education_Scholarship_and_Mormonism.html.

South Park: Nobody but Joseph Smith ever saw the plates.

Fact: There were twelve (count them: twelve!) witnesses to the plates. The angel Moroni himself showed the plates to three witnesses, who also heard the voice of God declaring the translation to be true. Joseph showed them to eight others, who hefted them and carefully examined the engravings. All twelve witnesses to the Book of Mormon (Joseph included) were faithful to their testimony to the end of their lives.

I find it odd how Mormons can have multiple wives, but if you are in college you cant sleep with your girlfriend. You can sleep with 8 wives, but you cant sleep with one while your getting educated. I know that a marraige certificate is the difference, but multiple wives? Come on lets be real. Your religion was started by a man, who want to people to believe in him and his ideas. So he played off of a man’s #1 weakness. Join my religion and you can have multiple wives. Which cant be any worse than having sex while in college before you are married!! Now I know that Joseph Smith said other things to get people to follow him, but if you have noticed all these cities that are cut off from society that are delivering their children to older men are of what religion?

  • Anonymous

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has not practiced polygamy (having multiple wives) for over a hundred years. You might be confusing things you see on TV, like HBO’s “Big Love”, which is about a group that split off from the church many years ago. It is a common misconception, and sometimes calculated deception that attributes polygamy to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If you want to find out what other misnomers are out there, I invite you to visit MORMON.ORG for casual inquiry and FAIRLDS.ORG for answers to some of the deeper questions that critics raise. I hope you actually take a look at these sites, even if you do not change your opinion, at least you will have heard the other side of the story. May the Lord bless you in your search for the truth.

I apologize for my comments. I dont want anyone to think I am trying to sway someone to change their thought process on religion. Just trying to find stuff out. I do think that even though Jim’s comments about BYU are harsh, his statements are still probably true. So he is still honoring the code. Because it states that one of the codes is to “be honest”. So to me that is all he is doing. He could have stated it differently, but he is still probably being honest. Once again Rick if you are memeber of this religion I apologize. No harm intended. I was talking about the group of Mormons that was on TV about 3 or 4 years ago that was stationed in Utah. But like I said I apologize.

  • Anonymous

No need to aplogize. My skin is thick enough to handle what anyone has to say, and I really didn’t take offense to your comment. I just wanted to set the record straight and invite you to learn more if you want to. Thanks for being kind enough to offer the apology though. There are some groups in Utah and Arizona (and other places) that practice polygamy. I can understand the confusing nature of these splinter groups, especially when some of the names sound similar to the church. As for me, I am a husband, a Dad, an American, a United States Navy Chief, hopefully a good friend and neighbor, and I’m a Mormon. Thanks again for your comment. I hope you have a great day!!

Did you drink tea or coffee? I’m pretty sure that I read that these “drinks” are covered in the honor code (at least back when Jim McMahon was there)….. ridiculous….
I would like to see the stats on which athletes are asked these questions – so far, all of the suspensions that I have seen are a black football player and a “mixed” football player….hmmm

  • Anonymous

This is what I heard from a “mormon” girl.

You can only get to the top layer of heaven by being married…..

Is Jesus then not up at the top level? Can’t have it both ways – either he was married to Mary Magdalene and made it there OR he never married and can’t make it to the top level of his Father’s house??

As a woman, I also question the whole bigamy thing….I know that it’s not the standard NOW, but why was it never practiced the other way? Why as a woman was I not allowed to have many husbands? Maybe I want a little variation in my life, too.

Ajarizona, you sound like the guy who sat around wanting to be like eveyone else because no one paid you any attention and now you are looking for a stage to get some. What Jim had to say will have no impact on his daughter or wife. I am sure his daughter knows what it’s all about and his wife understand the college life well and would know how to school her. You can sit on your high horse and wait for the pidgeons to be honest on your head. What a looser this guy!

I have known several “mormons” – and in Oklahoma, it seems like there are two distinct groups…one, a little more lenient.

Thank you for your intelligent posts and I am sorry if I or anybody else offended your church. That said, I do believe that there (like anything done by man) is definitely a reason to upgrade the “honor” code. I don’t believe for one minute that all of the other “famous” or unfamous athletes are living by that code. I do believe that he was singled out for one reason AND that the fact that he was honest about it should have made a difference….i.e. run laps, etc. There is no doubt in my mind that other students in that age group are either having sex with other people OR themselves…..

Also, I have a problem with this at any school: Don’t just single out the athletes for testing, questioning: drugs or otherwise…..Ask the band members, ask the engineering scholarship recipients; question and test EVERYBODY or NOBODY.

His father has been publically petitioning for his induction into the BYU Hall of Fame for several years now. The only requirement he has not fulfilled is graduating. It’s two classes, he can take them online. It’s the same reason Jason Buck, Outland Trophy winner, has not been inducted.

And it was the BYU community which nominated and promoted his induction into the College Hall of Fame. The graduation requirement for the College Hall of Fame was implemented one year after Jim left BYU. Otherwise he would not qualify for that hall either.

The BYU fans have been very forgiving to Jim, with all his nasty remarks, he loves Lavell, has come back to BYU many times. We’re trying to embrace him and he keeps spitting on the school.
    Enough already.

He was asked to leave the school the week after he played the last game. They wanted him to leave because of his behavior which was the same the whole time he was there. They knew who he was and used him. They are terrible hypocrites. They used him and then dismissed him. Why should he go back to take any credits. He is a successful man and doesn’t have any need for college credits He is far from a perfect man, but I would trust him before any administrator at BYU.

  • Anonymous

    Overlooked?

By Jims own admission he lied about his goings on at BYU. He took it all off campus and what the BYU honors code can’t prove they can’t enforce.
That reflects on Jim’s honor not the schools.

Jim used BYU. You never saw him with snuff while he was playing, but once the season was over he went uber-public with all his honor code violations, drinking, ciagrs, chew, etc.. That’s why he was released, the evidence was in.

He had no use for BYU anymore.
    Who left whom?

I know the history, I was there.

Jim played the rebel card wherever he went. It shortend his career, it got him traded numerous times and cost him what could have been a Hall of Fame career.

He was not disciplined in College, in the Pros, and even Now. Lacking Tact, is the least of his problems.

He is no prophet. He is just a man. Keep believing that b.s. but keep it to yourself. In this instance, McMahon represents all of who think for ourselves. You apparently represent that small group of people in every sphere who are lucky to have some silly code to hide behind because in reality, no one is all that interested in you anyway.

No, I’ll hitch my wagon to a Steve Young. Jims should have preceded Steve to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Instead, he was too interested in being the cool guy.

Well, 30 years of drinking later, memory loss and the thought of what could have been? Jim is still Jim. Steve has none of those regrets, because he grew up and and became a Man.

He doesn’t deny anything that he did there including breaking numerous rules. The thing you keep missing is that they ignored everything and kept him around until he played his last game. The next week they told him to go. Are you really that thick that you don’t see how hypocritical that is? Is your magic underwear on too tight?

  • http://profiles.google.com/byufootballtalk BYU Football

Not sure what the big deal about this is. McMahon didn’t say anything that was a big revelation.

The BYU Honor Code depends on people’s honor. So, naturally, if you find someone who doesn’t have enough honor to open his or her mouth when violating the code, you won’t get caught.

Jim McMahon and BYU is not the only place that finding people who “keep their mouth shut” is the way to circumvent the rules/law. Look at Barry Bonds right now. He found a friend who would rather spend years in jail than open his mouth and spill the beans about Bonds and steroid use.

  • Anonymous

He has memory loss from concussions you jackass not from drinking, many of which likely came while he was making BYU huge amounts of money. Then they kicked him out of school. His not being in the HOF is from injuries. Steve Young is terrific, and deserves everything he gets. That has nothing to do with Jim McMahon. You are a sad little man.

Oh the anti-Mormon bigotry has surfaced. I was there , you weren’t.

Jim took it all off campus. He played his golf and drank his beer at the Ogden Country Club, far away from campus, his inner circle, Danny Plater etc, kept it all under wraps, he’s written about how he got around the rules. Dipwad…

It was not out in the open. He explains to you how he practiced deception to survive, are you thick?

He was not honest, and he got around the rules by deception and lying. It kept him out of trouble, in that sense, he knew how to stay out of trouble. He became public with everything right after the last bowl game, thats when he was s reelased. Yes there were rumors, he was called in and never admitted to anything.
they took him at his word.

I honestly feel the Mormon religion itself is a joke along with many of their “Honor Code” rules(not even small HEALTHY amounts of caffeine?)… But they are very much kind and honorable people in general and some basic morality is good in general for society… Anyway, if you choose to go to their school and ESPECIALLY accept a scholarship then you have to accept that you will be subject to their rules!

  • Anonymous

Steve Young had far more concussions than Jim ever did. Jim had injuries, tis true, but he never took his conditioning seriously. A traditon at the Bears training camp is for all rookies to sing their Schools fight song, you can see this in Brians Song. Jim was the first known rookie to refuse to do so. His line, “Screw this I ain’t doing it” is infamous. Jim was almost phony in his non-conformist routine. It cost him an excellant career.

If you think his drinking did not effect his memory loss then your are an ignorant dope (redundant, I know).

Jim never took his profession as seriously as a Young did or Manning does. His career was a means to to other ends.
Rewrite history all you like, deos not make it so.
Your invocation of anti-mormon tripe tells us what your agenda really is.

small HEALTHY amounts of caffeine = chocolate
unhealthy amounts of caffeine = coffee, tea, colas, energy drinks, etc.

I just read an article in the Miami Herald today that caffeine is a “psychoactive substance.” Sounds like something to avoid.

I have a co-worker who told me that she was having trouble getting pregnant. When her doctor told her to cut caffeine from her diet, she got pregnant. The doctor explained that caffeine can prevent pregnancy in women.

Just some food for thought on caffeine.
