Cavan Biggio is starting a new journey in his big league career as he continues to follow in his dad’s footsteps. The son of Baseball Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, who spent his entire MLB stint with the Houston Astros, Cavan is also now an Astro, having signed a minor league contract with the club in February.
It can be considered a homecoming for Cavan, given his family connection to the club. He also shared a great reaction to donning the same threads his dad used to wear, while putting together a career that one day earned him an induction into Cooperstown.
“The colors are a little different, but the meaning is still the same,” the 30-year-old Biggio said, via Astros reporter Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. “It’s definitely a little bit more special wearing it as a player than, say, a bat boy.”
Unlike his dad, however, Biggio hasn’t quite established a huge presence in MLB despite several years spent in the big leagues. Entering what will be his eighth MLB season, Biggio only has a career batting line of .223/.339/.373 with a 6.9 bWAR. The senior Biggio, on the other hand, was already a three-time All-Star with slashlines of .282/.363/.404 to go along with a 23.5 bWAR in his first seven seasons in the big leagues.
Hopefully, for Biggio, he’ll be able to impress Houston enough to make it to the Astros’ Opening Day roster.
