Dodgers sign former rival closer
The Los Angeles Dodgers are stockpiling more bullpen arms.
Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors reported Saturday that the Dodgers have signed veteran reliever Giovanny Gallegos. The righty Gallegos is getting a minor-league deal from the Dodgers with an invite to spring training.
Gallegos, 33, had spent the last seven seasons pitching for the rival St. Louis Cardinals. That included a stint as St. Louis’ closer from 2021-23, during which Gallegos recorded 38 total saves.
That said, Gallegos had a horrific year in 2024, posting a comical 6.53 ERA in 21 relief appearances before eventually being designated for assignment by the Cardinals in late July. After a brief run later in the season with the Minnesota Twins on a minor-league deal, Gallegos (who has a career 3.49 ERA with 10.6 K/9) will now get a lifeline from a Dodgers squad that is facing their own free agent pitching uncertainty this offseason.
