Cleveland Guardians first baseman David Fry was hit in the face with a pitch during Tuesday night’s game, and the team has shared a positive update about the injuries he sustained.

Fry was hit in the face with a 99-mph fastball from Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal in the bottom of the sixth inning at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Fry came to the plate with runners on first and third and nobody out with the Guardians trailing 2-1. He squared around to bunt, and Skubal drilled him right in the nose with a pitch.

Fry was fortunately able to walk under his own power after remaining down for a while. A trainer held a towel over his nose as he left the field on a cart.

On Wednesday, the Guardians announced in a statement that Fry suffered multiple fractures to his face. He is expected to make a full recovery over the next 6-8 weeks, but doctors do not believe he will need surgery.

Fry was also discharged from the hospital and is “resting comfortably,” according to the team.

The Guardians entered Wednesday in a tie with the Tigers for first place in the AL Central. Both teams are 85-72 after Cleveland came back to win Tuesday night’s game 5-2.

Unless Fry is able to play with some sort of facial protection, he will likely be out for the entire postseason. While he is batting .171 in 66 games this season, he was a playoff hero just a year ago and could be missed.
