Max Muncy is raking at the plate right now for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he may have his optometrist to thank.
An interesting theory emerged this week about Muncy’s recent hot run of hitting, especially over the last month or so. Baseball statistician Tom Nestico shared a crazy graphic showing the numbers that Muncy has been producing ever since he started to wear glasses at the plate on Apr. 30.
Since then, Muncy’s strikeout numbers have been trimmed roughly in half while his power numbers have gone absolutely parabolic. Nestico noted that Muncy has looked like “a completely different hitter.”
Take a look at the graphic below.

Indeed, Muncy was statistically one of the worst hitters in baseball through the first month of the season. Before Apr. 30, Muncy was batting a miserable .180 with a .531 OPS and zero home runs. But since Apr. 30, Muncy has hit .264 with a .935 OPS and seven home runs (raising his season-long batting average by nearly 50 points to .227).
It turns out that two-time All-Star Muncy may largely have the glasses to thank. Ken Rosenthal noted on a recent game broadcast that Muncy started wearing them in order to help with his astigmatism.

Having better vision will obviously help when it comes to trying to hit a baseball, and Muncy is certainly reaping the benefits of his new bespectacled look. Muncy just has to make sure that he gets his prescription right (as one fellow baseball player once learned a hard lesson about).
