Mookie Betts: Dave Dombrowski firing does not change contract talks
The Boston Red Sox’s decision to fire Dave Dombrowski on Sunday night left some wondering that would change Mookie Betts’ perspective on his contract status with the team. The answer is it hasn’t.
Betts is due to become a free agent after 2020 and has said all year that his plan was to test free agency rather than sign a contract extension with the team. He says Dombrowski’s firing will not change his opinion on signing an extension. Instead, it further proves to him that baseball is a business.
Mookie Betts says nothing is going to change regarding his contract extension talks with Dombrowski now out. “It’s going to be the same answer.” Betts says “I love it here” but “this is proof that it’s still a business.”

Betts, who won the batting title and AL MVP last year, will receive some major contract offers as long as he stays healthy. He knows he holds all the leverage and will have plenty of interested suitors, so he will let them bid for his services and allow the market to determine his value.
