Pete Alonso trips over his own bat in bizarre scene during NLWC Game 2

Pete Alonso tripping on the field

Pete Alonso did his best Benny Hill impression during Game 2 of the NL Wild Card series.

In the first inning of Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the New York Mets slugger Alonso was up at the plate with two on and one out. Unfortunately though, Alonso hit a grounder to the shortstop for a tailor-made inning-ending double play.

To add insult to injury, Alonso somehow managed to trip over his own bat after he hit the grounder, causing him to fall over right out of the batter’s box as he was trying to get to first base. Take a look at the bizarre video.

The former MLB home runs leader Alonso, who only stole three bases all season, probably wouldn’t have beat out the double play anyway. But that was ridiculous absent-mindedness to toss down his bat right into his own running path. Maybe we can chalk that one up to playoff nerves.

Alonso had another strong regular season overall, appearing in all 162 games and hitting 34 home runs with 88 RBIs. But that inability to get out of his own way there was reminiscent of the mishap that another fellow New York athlete once suffered.
