The Cincinnati Reds are losing one of their top prospects to Tommy John surgery.
Cincinnati announced on Monday that Hunter Greene, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft, will undergo Tommy John surgery. Dr. Neal ElAttrache, a leader in the field, will perform the surgery.
Greene was a two-way player upon entering professional baseball and tried batting initially before giving that up to focus on pitching full-time. The 6-foot-3 right-hander showed incredible velocity entering the draft and even was clocked at 103 mph last year.

Greene had shaky stats in his first two seasons and was shut down due to an elbow injury last year after going just 3-7 with a 4.48 ERA in 68 innings of Single-A ball. The Reds say he suffered a setback while throwing to hitters in Arizona over the weekend, leading to the surgery recommendation.
