The debate over the Tampa Bay Rays’ postseason venue has been settled.

The Rays will play their home games at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fl. if they make the postseason, commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed Tuesday. Manfred said he understands that the Rays are facing a “unique situation,” but that teams should simply be playing in their home stadium during the postseason.

“Our rule has always been that people play in their home stadiums during the World Series. And I’m not of a mind to change that rule,” Manfred said.

There had been some questions about whether the Rays would be allowed to host postseason games at what is still a minor league stadium. Steinbrenner Field only accommodates 10,046 fans, which would be an issue for the playoffs. The need for additional space for media members and corporate attendees could also present problems.

Ultimately, there are not a lot of alternatives for where the Rays could play. The alternatives would also involve significant travel for Rays players and their families, which is a scenario the league would seek to avoid.

Notably, this would only become an issue if they make it to the American League Division Series. The Rays sit 1.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot as of the All-Star break.
