Blake Griffin tells funny story about failed recruitment of former Clippers teammate
Blake Griffin learned the hard way this summer that free agency can be a fickle mistress.
In an appearance this week on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take,” the Detroit Pistons star told a funny story about how he tried to recruit free agents to the team this offseason but wound up failing spectacularly.
“I did a few calls, a few texts, a few reach-outs,” said Griffin. “You know what? I think I was 0 for 3 this year.”
The six-time All-Star then described how former LA Clippers teammate Jeff Green was one of the players that he unsuccessfully reached out to.
“I texted him and literally like I think like 30 minutes later it was like ‘Jeff Green has signed with the Utah Jazz,'” he said. “I was like ‘alright.'”
Green, who signed a one-year deal with the Jazz for the veteran’s minimum, was teammates with Griffin on the Clippers during the 2015-16 season.
Other big NBA names were perplexed that Green settled for the minimum, so it is interesting that he said no to Griffin and the Pistons, apparently without even attempting to negotiate.
