Jason Kidd is losing a key member of his Dallas Mavericks coaching staff to a rival.
Top Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney is set to become the new associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Sweeney had been courted by new coach Mitch Johnson to take the position.

Sweeney has worked with Kidd in both Milwaukee and Brooklyn, and moved with him to Dallas when Kidd took that job in 2021. It is an interesting time for him to leave, with the Mavericks about to land Cooper Flagg in the NBA Draft later this month.
The Mavericks are still dealing with some uncertainty regarding Kidd as well. The New York Knicks targeted him as their new head coach, and while they were rebuffed, there have been reports that the door might not be completely shut on the possibility.
Perhaps this is a signal that Kidd is not fully committed to the Mavericks. At the very least, Sweeney thought it was time to move on, and lands a nice gig elsewhere.
