Kawhi Leonard might possibly be going from the LA Clippers to [checks notes] a team that is somehow even older.
The Golden State Warriors appear to have been one of the teams that pursued the Clippers star Leonard at the trade deadline, Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard reported Saturday. Kawamaki further suggested that the Warriors may potentially be “going hard” after Leonard this summer.
Additionally, Kawakami notes that Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James could be another target for the Warriors in the offseason, a pairing that has long been rumored as a possibility. You can read Kawakami’s full report on the situation here.
Leonard, 34, was an All-Star this season and is averaging a career-high 28.3 points to go along with 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. He is also on track to meet the 65-game minimum for NBA award eligibility with 58 games played and eight games left to go in the regular season.
Meanwhile, Leonard is still under contract for $50.3 million next season. But his contract could potentially get voided by the league pursuant to the Aspiration scandal, meaning that Leonard would immediately become an unrestricted free agent and be able to sign with any NBA team.
The Clippers began the season as the oldest team in the NBA and were followed by the Warriors at No. 2. But after dumping Chris Paul and also adding younger players in Bennedict Mathurin and Isaiah Jackson in the trade of Ivica Zubac, the Clippers are actually now a bit younger than the Warriors, who turned Jonathan Kuminga into the older Kristaps Porzingis at the trade deadline. While it would be odd to see Leonard end up on an older team, Golden State is desperate to win now and might be in a position to beat out some of Leonard’s other potential suitors.
